Fields of Fire

Fields of Fire

Fields of Fire (2003)

...somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs

--W. B. Yeats, "The Second Coming"

Traditionally, a field of fire is the area around a weapon or group of weapons that can be easily and effectively reached by gunfire.

Traditionally...

Roxanne Kaylor quoted in Salon: "I would tell [Bush] he is a liar and that he is no good for this country, and that he is killing great people. And for what reason? I don't know. Imagine if this happened to your own child. How would that make you feel?"

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Blood seeps into gravel
Bruised and cold
A heart as puny as
Menstrual clotting

Marking the earth
For a crime scene
Hard to scrub out
Pebble by pebble

Strained up against
Roots that wouldn't grow
Marrow that cracked
Loose from hip bones

Feelers that no longer feel
Crisp or resplendent
Chilled above the core
A discarded jack

Where are the Parades?
Where are all the crowds with the waving flags?
Where are the marching bands ?
Is there a mama there crying for a son?
Does she still believe the King's lies?

That Box holds All her Hopes and Dreams...
Memories of little sticky fingers, muddy boots
and torn little jeans.
Bubble gum and freckles.
She held his little hand and they watched the Parade pass..
and when he asked about the Soldiers in their crisp uniforms marching by with such vigorous pride....
She held his little hand tighter and said a prayer.

She cries as she remembers the Prayer...and she
wonders why God wasn't listening ?
