Behind the Candle

no one is safe. Lit and left
in the window to guide home

those who have now departed,
wandering beyond memory

into the shadows we mourn
how long before it burns out,

the wick snuffed, the wax
pooled over the ledge,

lost in the darkest of black
until dawn, merciless with light,

cracks the windowpane
open to a new day

that no longer cares
for anybody we knew or loved.
