Channelled Fractal 12: Jimi Hendrix

In 2001, I created a mock series of twenty images in which I pretended to "channel" dead famous personages in order to let them create their own fractal imagery.

These images were made before I started working more large scale in "wall mode," so the originals are only 600x800 pixels. I suppose the lower resolution made it less difficult for the departed to speak through them.

These images were initially posted to the Usenet group alt.binaries.pictures.fractals. Here is the explanation that initially accompanied them:

Out of concern that my art was becoming "depressing" and a desire to reacquaint myself with my more spiritual inner child, I have begun channeling fractals from others who have crossed over fractal-less into the Great Beyond. The process is simple. I close my eyes, turn on a generator, place crystals atop my monitor, burn peppermint incense, tie-dye some work clothes, and chant in a phony Jamaican accent. Soon, through intense meditation and lots of Fox Television programming, I slip into a beta state while leaving my fingers gently on my mouse -- which soon begins moving spasmodically on its pad much like a planchette. According to witnesses, there is the acrid smell of ectoplasm in the room as blood trickles down my monitor and eerily spells out the name of my troubled collaborator. When I awaken from my fugue state, the fractal is finished. However, I can take little credit for these works; after all, I am merely the vessel of a higher power.

I plan to post some of the series in the coming days.

I haven't posted anything lately to either my blog or my web site. Why? Because I have discovered a trend that many art and literary magazines are now stipulating that submissions cannot have previously appeared on either a personal blog or web site. This situation has made me increasingly leery of placing any new work either here or on my web site.

I have never considered art or poetry that appears on this blog to be "published" in the conventional sense of the term -- but, unfortunately, some art and literary venues do. I am upset over this situation. It certainly crimps my ability to freely share my work with an established online audience without seriously limiting the possibilities for disseminating both my art and my poetry.

I am still making new work, but, sadly, I will be sharing it less often in this blog, since doing so apparently erodes the likelihood for being able to place it in a growing number of fine arts journals.

Chris Runyan, my longtime good friend and bandmate, passed away last night.

Chris was the most creatively gifted person I have ever known -- equal parts musician, writer, and artist.

His guitar playing would sometimes literally take my breath away. His paintings continue to move me -- mysterious, ironic, enigmatic -- unafraid of confronting ideas and social commentary.

My life has been far richer for having met and known him.

This is the end result of another image I worked on while "going live" last weekend, an experience I talked about in my last post.

The image was begun in a local restaurant during Art Week 09, part of which includes placing artists in various venues around Little Rock and North Little Rock. Artists were supposed to work on pieces and show their process. My wife and I set up in Sticky Fingerz in Little Rock's River Market district. I'd spent days before assembling a traveling digital studio on my laptop, so we packed up laptop, projector, screen, mike, stands, cords, and karaoke machine, and off we went. I worked on fractal/digital art for four hours and talked to many interesting and interested people, including several graphic designers, a mathematician, and other artists.

I worked on four pieces live and considered none of them done. I posted the last live "draft" of one image named (by the crowd) Sticky Lucky Cat to show what had been done live. That image is still being worked over at my home studio where it will one day appear as Lucky Cat, that is, the final image. Sinister Riptide began live and then was beat severely around the pixels in the comforts of home.

Last night, I participated in Art Week 09.

One aim of the festivities was to place visual artists in various locales around the cities of Little Rock and North Little Rock. I received a call from one of the coordinators asking me if I'd like to participate. He had visited my web site and had liked my "paintings." I had to explain that I made digital art. Although every other participating artist was either painting or creating mixed media constructions, I said I could take a laptop and projector and demonstrate how I make my art. He agreed and put me on the schedule. I spent several days doing the best I could to build a portable digital art studio on my laptop.

So, come Saturday afternoon, Cindy (my wife) and I packed up: laptop, projector, stands, portable screen, mike, karaoke machine (for sound), and a few prints (for show).

We set up at Sticky Fingerz, a restaurant and music venue, in Little Rock's River Market, and I made art for four hours while we talked to the crowd, showed off prints, and handed out business cards. I worked on five images -- explaining my process as I went and taking suggestions from the audience as to what should be kept or undone. Some friends dropped by, and I talked to a number of cool people, including a mathematician and several graphic designers. One guy even wanted me to teach him Photoshop.

It was a good time, and I hope the Art Week organizers ask me to participate again next year.
